The economy of Hefei, the capital city and economic center of Anhui province in the eastern part of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), has been growing at an average annual rate of 13.5% since 2000. Rapid economic growth, industrialization, and urbanization have led to urban environmental pollution and degradation.
To cope with the dramatic growth in traffic demand, the government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) formulated in 1988 a long-term strategy to implement a 35,000 kilometer (km) national trunk highway system. By 2004, this strategy had further evolved into a plan for a national expressway network with a total length of 85,000 km and which was targeted for completion by 2020.
In 2006, Solomon Islands was still recovering from years of conflict (1999–2003), and confronted with 20% poverty incidence, poor human development, and high unemployment.
Landlocked Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) is poor, mountainous, and sparsely populated. Most of its poor live in rural areas with limited access and connection to the outside world. Improving road access removes the physical and cost impediments to the provision of social services and enhances the ability of the poor to benefit from overall economic growth.
