Shanxi province is situated in the middle reaches of the Yellow River and the eastern part of the Loess Plateau in northern People’s Republic of China (PRC). At project appraisal, it had only about 3.8 million hectares of dependable arable land, of modest quality and productivity, for its 23 million rural population.
Livestock is a major component of the agricultural systems in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), contributing more than a third of the sector’s value-added. It is particularly important in the mountainous northern provinces where food crop agriculture is based on unsustainable shifting cultivation.
The North East Community Restoration and Development (NECORD) project comprises four overlapping interventions, each designed to meet the requests of the government of Sri Lanka for support to rebuild basic services and livelihoods in the northern and eastern provinces damaged or disrupted by 20 years of armed conflict between government forces and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
