For nearly 3 decades, Sri Lanka had been severely affected by an internal armed conflict. The entire country suffered but the Northern Province bore the brunt of the conflict. The conflict intensified from February 2007 and government forces gained full control in May 2009.
The Eastern and North Central Provinces of Sri Lanka were adversely affected by the prolonged internal armed conflict in the country, which ceased in May 2009.
In early 2000, only 29% of Sri Lanka’s population, mostly in urban areas, had piped water services. One-quarter of the population had no access to safe sanitation.
The Southern Transport Development Project, which aimed to catalyze the development of the socioeconomically deprived southern region and improve road safety nationwide, is the largest greenfield road project ever implemented in Sri Lanka.
The North East Community Restoration and Development (NECORD) project comprises four overlapping interventions, each designed to meet the requests of the government of Sri Lanka for support to rebuild basic services and livelihoods in the northern and eastern provinces damaged or disrupted by 20 years of armed conflict between government forces and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
